Oscar night tonight and we decided to remember some of the best movies whose themes are close to brokers!

Let’s begin by the Oscar wining “The Big Short” which came out in 2015. The plot: In 2006-2007 a group of investors bet against the US mortgage market. In their research, they discover how flawed and corrupt the market is. It won the Oscar for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay. It also won a BAFTA award for Best Adapted Screenplay and 3 nominations. It was also nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Christian Bale, Best Achievement in Directing and Best Achievement in Film Editing. It also got 4 Golden Globe nominations and many more wins and nominations.

For another Oscar winning movie, we need to travel back in time to 1987. Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street” which tells the story of a young and impatient stockbroker who is willing to do anything to get to the top, including trading on illegal inside information taken through a ruthless and greedy corporate raider who takes the youth under his wing. The Oscar was for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Michael Douglas who also won the Golden Globe.

Oliver Stone seems to find Wall Street an interesting subject as in 2010 he made another movie about it. A sequel to the 1987 movie called Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Now out of prison but still disgraced by his peers, Gordon Gekko works his future son-in-law, an idealistic stock broker, when he sees an opportunity to take down a Wall Street enemy and rebuild his empire. Once again Michael Douglas got nominated for the Golden Globe Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture only this time he didn’t get it.

Last stop, no awards but still an amazing movie. Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. An amazing performance by Leonardo Di Caprio and a realistic look into how the industry was like during it's boom.
